I was thinking along the same line. Chevettes and Pintos engines were too small. My IH 144 c.i. engine is around 2.4 liters. Ford Maverick was 170 c.i. 1960s Falcon would be perfect - 144 c.i. Corvairs were 140 c.i. which also might be just what I need. I've got to look around. Problem is, not an awful lot of the older cars with small engines laying around anymore.
I've got a large tractor junkyard near me and it's easier finding old tractor parts than old car parts. But . . . I don't know of many farm tractors with downdraft carbs.
