Not told enough here to really analyze this, but it sounds like you made a hasty, poorly thought out decision, and failed to handle it properly with your beloved union. You made someone high up in the union mad and he/she nailed you. Could have been that you went straight to beg back with management instead of going through the union, and letting them play big shot. There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
