When I was a kid, I had a home-made wooden go cart with a B&S engine, rope start. The carb had one butterfly, and I used it to slow the RPM's, but I think it was actually a choke, and the engine was meant to run at a governed constant speed. It ran just as good backwards as it did forward. I've thought about that engine running backward so well, and have decided that I'm not smart enough to figure out why it ran good either direction.
