Mark, here are a some thoughts:

I have an Oliver 1650 gas tractor, category 2, 66 PTO HP, live hydraulics, which is way more tractor than I need and possibly more than you need but then again, it starts at -25, plows 16" of snow using the box blade with the throttle at idle, and will move sand and gravel with the 1610 loader all day long with the temperature at +95 without any sign of overheating. Parts are available from White (AGCO) dealers and NAPA and it is as easy to work on as it gets. Oliver did make Hydraulic Powered Front-Wheel Drive (HPFWD) tractors but they are few and far between. With decent tires, my 2wd has never come close to getting stuck. A clean 1650 can be had for 3k to 5k depending on where you buy it.

When you decide on a used tractor brand, find an old farmer in your area who farms with the type of tractor you are interested in and ask him to look at any candidate tractor you might want to buy. Some people who sell old tractors don't always tell the whole story and an old-timer with experience in that type of tractor can help you avoid buying someone else's problem tractor. Be especially wary of diesels, often the reason they are being sold is the injector pump ($$$) is shot.

And when you get your pride and joy home, buy all the manuals available for it (operators, parts, service) and change all the fluids and filters.
