Four wheel drive is not mandatory under any circumstances. If it's too wet, wait. If it's too steep, stay off it. Around here when the first four wheel drives became available, the owners got real brave and bragged them up all over the country. Once they had spun them into a wet hole a couple of times and a few poor souls got killed or crippled when they flipped, people learned that it was a feature that helped performance, it was not and is not an overall cure for poor operating conditions or an overly optimistic operator. If you want to talk about expense, wait till you have to fix the front ends on some of these gems. I ran four wheel drives for years and I won't have another one. A ford 4000 or 5000 is a fine tractor. Talk to a trusted neighbour, find out who the reputable dealers are, and see what they can do for you. Good Luck. Tom
