There ought to be two lines on the tank. The big one coming off the bottom should go to the pump. There should be another one going from the valve to the tank. This is where you want to put the filter. If you put it in the pump suction line you risk causing cavitation in the pump. Never put a spin-on type filter in a pressure line, it will definately leak, and probably explode. See if you can get a filter body with a condition indicator so you know when the filter is bypassing. Be careful when you flush your system, some resevoirs have the pick-up elevated from the bottom of the tank to allow contaminants to settle out. Even if the fitting enters the tank from the bottom, there may be a short extension inside. This could trap a significant amount of whatever fluid you use to flush the system. I would just install the filter, run it for an hour or three, and then change the oil and filter.

I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
