Roy, an easy way to find top dead center is to write down the firing order like 1-3-4-2 take the last half of the numbers an put them directly under the first half. The number that is directly under the top number is at the top when the other is. Turn it around till number 1 is at the top the watch number 4 (in this case) the valves should move up an down as you roll the engine back and forth stop when the two valves are just stopped at the closed position. this will be TDC on number 1. You can then check to see if the piston is at the top position if not the cam is out of time. Most older engines will time at 10 deg. before TDC and 30 deg. at full advance. If there is no mark on the front pulley then put a chalk mark at these two positions on the pulley and on the block for reference. I hope that this helps call me if you have trouble.
