Eddie, I had an 82 GMC pickup with a 6 cylinder. I was leaving work one day and man did it start knocking just like you explained. Everyone looked and I shut it down. Checked the oil and all was okay. I started it back up and the noise was gone. I drove it home of 30 miles and it ran fine and ran fine ever since. I was told that it had to be a chunk of carbon break loose in the combustion chamber to cause the noise. I never did find out what caused it.
I've also seen v-belts on forklifts cause a noise that sounds like a rod knocking and I swore that's what it was at the time, until another mechanic came up and poured water on the belt and the noise went away.
If the noise on your tractor would stick around for a period of time I would be concerned but run it and see if it does it again, if it does then I would quickly try to diagnose it while it's running.

After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
