Fred, 1) I use the ratcheting 1" nylon strap and put in just enoough air to push the beads against the wheel. Then I remove the strap and continue to inflate the tire to desired pressure. 2) Sometimes I slip the female coupling of the hose over the valve stem without using the air chuck. This allows more air flow and I will bounce the tire off the floor while blowing air into it. 3) Used tires are usually easier to seal, because they have already taken a "set" and may already touching the beads. New ones usually come with the beads very close together and difficult to spread without external help. 4) I don't think I would ever try igniting ether or cigarette lighter fluid inside the tire. I've heard too many stories about that method including fatal ones. Ken McWilliams
