Stumpy, If the oil has a creamy or milky appearance, it has water. Gear lube doesn't smell very good, but if it smells musty it could have a high water content and is supporting baterial growth. I sometimes smell this odor around CNC machining centers that use water/oil emulsions - a very foul smell. If so, drain the lube and replace it. You will always have spots of rust due to the cold winters and condensation. As the tractor warms up and then cools down, it will draw moisture into the trans/diff case. Spots of rust won't hurt. To avoid it keep the tractor warm all winter or move to the tropics. In both cases keep it inside out of the rain. The engine does the same thing, but generally gets warm enough to drive out the moisture whereas the gearcase doesn't get warm enough. Ken McWilliams Dayton, OH
