John Deere M clutch problem

Have 48 JD M that sometimes will shift without grinding gears, other times have to shut down and put in gear, and restart. Sometimes when I depress clutch pedal to stop it clutch engages properly, other times I have to lock up brakes which almost kills engine. Do I have to split tracor (horror) to find difficulty or is there another way. Have had tractor for 12 years and problem has gotton progressively worse, but now is dangerous. Thank you
