Here are two stories on the same topic: 1) I worked one summer at a test facility for one of the Big 3 automakers. They did the clean oil / no oil change test. They could measure some wear on the engines with dirty oil, couldn't detect any wear at all on the engines with clean oil. 2) A neighbor bought a car new. Several years later he was talking about how reliable it had been, was now up to 160,000 miles and had only used one quart of oil. He had never changed the oil, just had added one quart the entire time he'd owned it. Personally, I change the oil every 3-4000 miles and the antifreeze every couple of years. That's probably too often, but it doesn't cost much.
