Had a holstein cow have her third calving on friday. She looked abit off on thursday, but knew she was close calving so thought not too awfull much of it.On friday we pulled out a bull, put her in another pen and pulled a second one out backwards, dead. She was abit wobbly looking, even though she's only 4 or 5,gave her 2 calcium under the skin. One thing I did notice when puling the calves out she was so ketotic, you could even smell the acidity off the calves being born.Gave her a quadrupal dose of Glycol P since friday and the smell is getting better on her breath. This morning she couldn't get up and looked extremly dehydrated.Gave her another calcium in the vein along with 50 mls of trivetrin incase she's got mastitis too, plus pumped 6 gallon's of warm water with a stint tube,a piece of 3/4 water hose for an extension and a cleaned out teat dip pump.At this point I don't think she may make it.She looked great wednesday, under controll yesterday, but today BOOM.She was 2 weeks early, not uncommon for twinning and had absolutely no udder fill on friday, couldn't even get more than a squirt for the calf.Bulls are so cheap here, figured it wasn't worth the 35 bucks plus the gas to go get some colostrum suppliment for a underweight bull calf, now 2 days later,it's just about dead too.Now I know why some people ultrasound for twins and cull almost all cows carrying them.Never in my 35 years saw a young cow go down so fast.
