If there is no/low water in the radiator the guage won't work. The sending unit must be submerged in the liquid to register anything. If a water cooled engine has run more than 60 seconds without being full of water it has been overheated. You already had a problem before you got it hot but that sure didn't help any. If the smoke it was blowing was white [thats the water that is supposed to be in the water jacket, not the combustion chamber] stopleak is not going to help. If its bad enough to see white smoke out the tailpipe you just as well take the head back off and it COULD be the head gasket but it also could be a crack. I drove a Isuzu built Chebby LUV for 8 years and it blew the head gasket. The first gasket I put in didn't last very long because I didn't have the head planed. The second time I had the head surfaced and it lasted good. I DID get mine hot the same as you and it didn't crack anything. The reason mine didn't crack is I did not pour cold water in after I found out I had low water. Pouring cold water in a hot motor will almost guarantee a crack so I let it cool on its own. I wish you the best of luck. Let us know what you find after you get the head off.
