I spent 23 years in Louisville , Ky. on the PD before it merged with the county and took in their 400 officers which then gave LMPD about 1300 total. I was in K-9 a few years but got bored and rode a beat (late watch) for two decades. I worked in all the projects and got shot at twice that I know of. (sometimes the crooks would walk out and fire a few rounds in your general direction). I came close to shooting someone several times but managed to de-escalate the situation, knock on wood. It is heck to go through if you pop a cap into someone. ( That is why some police get shot, they hesitate for that very reason). As for age, we have retired firemen join the force. You need 20/20 vision, corrected, and I believe a college degree to get on here now. Prior military is a plus. I guess the most notorious crime I was directly involved in was the Standard Gravure massacre. Go ahead and give it a try. I had fun chasing bad guys and "saving" people from their own indescretions.
