Steered a 54 Ford 1 1/2 ton Army flat bed loaded with fertilizer from one corner of 32 acre field to opposite corner ,upon Then I turned off the key as per DADS instructions . I was in the 3rd Grade that spring , Then, 39 International 1 1/2 ton truck, belonged to the good hearted neighbor , who tossed hay on while I crept along in GRANNY LOW age 11, At age 12 ran dads BRAND new 69 Ford pickup into the barn ,after coming up the lane from feeding hoggs ,, My muddy feet slipped off the pedals ,Coulda avoided that by adjusting the seat to my short legs . Put a small dent in the hood , that became a instrument of Conversation of my brothers for my stupidity ,, They still like to remind me 40 yrs later .. LOL.. age 14 .Drove a nice air./ conditioned 69 Chevy CHEYENNE long bed ( anyone remember the 9 inch longer bed ?) all over the hog farm doing chores .. first Automatic I EVER Drove,... at 15 I was driving that CHEYEENE home in the dark from the county seat as part of a caravan of 4 or more trucks loaded with feed that we offloaded from a boxcar. The guy that owned the Cheyenne was a county cop , would not allow Me behind the wheel in Daylite hours ..Most everyone around here 30 yrs ago drove something before they were street legal ,, I mentioned the Straw berry fields in a earlier post .. When I was 6 I remember Ricky who was 8 come bouncing down the lane in a International pickup ..rolled up to moms crating shed ,And Told Mom , that his daddy needed a bunch of crates right away.. Naturally I wanted to help ,and did what I could to help load ,. Ricky told me there is good Shade on the other side, so mom packed us Up and sent us on Our way .. Ricky would start the truck in 1st gear , Use The hand throttle choke caBLE for speed ,AND when we got to our spot He simply switched off the key ,, NEVER TOUCHING THE PEDALS ... I truly believe there was no harm in giving any of Us that responsibility with potentially dangerous equipment of all kinds back then ,, My DAD always made Sure I knew How to shut everything down before sending us On Our way ,,And He preached safety on HILLS , To the Point We always answered him ," YEAH , WE KNOW DAD "
