This question has probably been posted before, but something that happened this afternoon got me to thinking about it.
This afternoon my son asked my oldest granddaughter (13) if she had ever driven a car and she said no, so he got her in the Chevette and gave her a lesson. It has a stick, so the car did the normal amount of jumping and jerking at first, but once she got it rolling she did a good job. Kind of brought a tear to my eye because she looks just like my her mother did at that age.
My first experience with with dad's '49' International KB1 when I was about eight years old. I was riding with him and he had to get out to open a gate so he told me to get in the driver's seat, push down on the left pedal, pull the lever on the steering column back and down, push down on the pedal on the right, let the left pedal out and steer it through the gate. (or words similar to that) Well, I pulled the lever back and went up into reverse instead of down into first and away I went backwards with dad running after me. After a few feet I got it stopped, slipped it into low gear and drove it through the open gate, much to the relief of my dad. The muffler was rotted off so you can imagine the noise level cause I wasn't exactly easy on the foot feed. Never had an ounce of trouble after that. Jim
