This is a follow up to my post about the 3116 CAT that wouldn"t start. I found the problem with the help of a local diesel shop"s fuel pump expert. On the shaft inside the pump that connects to the rack there is a very small snap ring near the end of the shaft that is known to break or just fall off. It holds the washers and spring that receive the govenor linkage. Upon disassembly of my pump sure enough the snap ring was gone. I found a snap ring in a Holley carb kit I had and used it, I had to sand it down to the proper thickness since the groove on the shaft is very narrow. I was told that CAT makes a new design shaft with a deeper snap ring groove that runs about $200. I"m going to buy it and replace what"s in mine now but for the time being at least it"s running again. This would be a costly tow and repair bill if you were out on the road. I have a fax copy of a parts blow up of the pump, this was very helpful.

In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
