The computer controls really helped put the performance and economy into the modern diesels. Then the EPA came along.
GM has a 4.5L Duramax ready for production, but the guy in charge of the program, who was promotoed to CEO, was just kicked out. Cummins has a v6 and a v8 ready to go, but the retards at Chrysler put that off in the half-ton. The Liberty had the same v6 available as the Cherokee, but for a couple more years, my guess is they gave it the axe because they were the ones that didn't spend most of their first three months at the dealer for repairs like my aunt's gas liberty did.
Ford also has a small v8 ready for the f-150, but they don't want to be first to market with it. Whoever gets them out first will sell some trucks. Ford's new Ecoboost motor is basically a diesel tuned to run on gasoline. All three need to get the small diesels to market and make them available in their larger cars. CAFE goes up, and guys like me would at least go look at them. I like the new Camaro and Challenger, but 1) They are rather impractical for me and 2) I couldn't afford to feed it if I got one. Plus you can mod a diesel for economy a lot easier than you can a gasser, without sacrificing performance. And for power or economy gained, the diesel is much cheaper to mod.
