I stated clearly that I did the work myself, and did not pay someone else to do it.

I called nobody a liar, not even close.

Also note that Volkswagen never gave a suggest mileage figure for cam belt changes. All Volkswagen dealers and mechanics that I've spoken with recommend a 100K to 120K figure. I've stuck with that, and those I've pulled apart at the mile mark were still fine. I changed anyway.

I'll add that with all my Volkswagen diesels, and all my Isuzu diesels, and all my gas engines with timing-belt drive cams, I've never yet needed any parts in that area other than the belt, and a few idler bearings. I've never had any worn pulleys or cog gears, and never needed any gaskets.
Back in the early days of USA cars with belt, yest it was an issue. My Ford Pintos and Chevy gas engine Chevettes needs all that stuff at every change.

I usually buy brand new timing belts for any of my engines for $3 to $15 each. It's what you might call "shopping around."

Right now, at Rock Auto, if I wanted to buy some more brand new timing belts for my 91 Diesel Jettas - there are my options. Cheapest today is less then six bucks.
