According to the Phillips & Temro site, block heaters(freeze plug)are designed to heat the specific engine in about 5 hours time. Whether it needs to be that hot or take 5 hours depends on the outside temperature. Even with a tank heater, if it's -30C or colder, it's going to need to be plugged in longer than an hour. The best heater I ever had on any equipment was on a welder I had. It had a 4 cylinder Perkins 4-154 with what Miller called the Arctic modification. It had a tank type heater hooked to an oil heater and also a battery warmer and radiator shutters. Being it was a welder, it was completely closed in. I started it in -20C after plugging it in for 20 minutes. It still had summer diesel in it! It started and ran about 45 seconds and then quit. I started it again and it kept running at a slow idle. It took about another 40 minutes before it would rev up at all. Dave
