Been in the trucking business for 20 years. I like to see my engines stay at a staedy temp if possible. If thermostat is good most engines will hold a steady 180 degrees at 1000 to 1200 rpm. That being said, I tell my drivers, if you are going to be out of the truck for more than an hour, shut it off. If less than an hour, let her run. I feel that it is worth a gallon of fuel to save one cooling and rewarming cycle. A lot of damage can be done to an engine by working ot too hard before it is fully warm.
