Few diesel & even many gas engines will not fully warm up if left idling. The partialy burned byproducts combustion are engine wreckers & air polluters. Much better to use a block heater to prewarm. Electric heat costs less than heat from fuel. The factory design engineers state in the manuals. Start engine, allow oil pressure to build. Drive or operate at moderate load & RPM until engine warms. I'll take their word. Of course full RPM & load on a stone cold engine is certain grief. When the thermostat snaps open & a slug of cold water from the rad over cools the now overheated engine.
