the valve stems on a 8-N ford face down,about 4 inches below the top of the block deck.they were never nowen to leak oil by the valve guides because the oil would have to floww up hill to get to the combustion chamber.most lickley the motor is just tired,run a leak down test on it and if it,s over 12 percent in needs the motor re-done.the reason they tell you to use non-detergent oil in it and it does not mater who made the motor,is that most of tractor motors up to the late 50,s didnot have a full flow oil filter,this meand only part of the oil was being filtered,so wen you start using detergent oil it starts washing every thing around in the motor.
