My nine yr old has a .22 cricket, rem 870 .20 gauge and a rem 700 .243 all used for target or hunting. Got him started with the .22 at age 6 taught him the correct way to handle them. He knows what is what and is only allowed to do so with me by his side. I think it depends on the child and parents but safety and responsibility are number one.
