I'm not that old, haven't hit 40, and I remember counter checks as common around 'here' 20 years ago. I must come from a similar neighborhood as you, as I understand exactly what you are saying.

As I said below, I also understand needing to be careful when you're left holding a piece of paper, & the other guy is driving off with good hardware....

But there are 2 sides to the transaction, & I think Mike needs to look at it from the other guy's point of view. If someone points me to the door and (based on my local customs) insults me, you bet I won't be coming back with money in hand. :)

I was looking for a car hauler trailer a couple years ago, was a good one on the side of the road for several days. Stopped to look at it, the owner pulls up & talks. I says I'm looking for a trailer, what does he want for it? He says this & that & the other thing, eventually says maybe $1200, but there might be another buyer, he might have sold it yesterday..... Well, to be honest, I'm not sure what he said. Me, I was ready to pay $1200 for it, nice trailer... But, his reply was so confusing, I just said thanks, got back in my pickup & kept driving. Saw it there for another 2 weeks with the sign on it, but dern if I'd stop a second time. Couldn't figure out the scam, but it felt like one.

Sellers get screwed a lot & need to be careful, but honest buyers have feelings too.

Today's Featured Article - Product Review: Black Tire Paint - by Staff. I have been fortunate in that two of my tractors have had rear tires that were in great shape when I bought the tractor. My model "H" even had the old style fronts with plenty of tread. My "L" fronts were mismatched Sears Guardsman snow tires, which I promptly tossed. Well, although these tires were in good shape as far as tread was concerned, they looked real sad. All were flat, but new tubes fixed that. In addition to years and years of scuffing and fading, they had paint splattered on ... [Read Article]
