nutwood said: (quoted from post at 00:46:08 05/09/10) I"m in the process of buying a 900 series Belarus. Previous owner removed 12V Belarus starter and fitted a 24V CAV from a Perkins diesel.
He obviously went wrong somewhere as within twelve months it destroyed the ring gear and starter gear.
I"ve yet to get my hands on it, but the plan is to install another flywheel (got that) and sort out the meshing.
I"ve never had a meshing problem before. What things do I need to consider? I've obviously got to get a new gear for the CAV. As far as I can research, the Belarus starter had 10 teeth and so did the CAV (yet to be confirmed). Is it likely that the tooth spacing would have been different, or is it more likely that he simply got the mounting position wrong and the teeth weren"t engaging correctly?
Was the pinion gear a different pitch than the ring gear?
