Saturday morning we left the barn lot ot harvest corn in earnest. After a couple minor glitches we got 40 acres knocked out which is pretty good for us on the first day.
This is a 105 day corn planted april 13th. The moisture is 21, the yeild varies alot because of the wet spots and without the yield monitor calibrated I am not sure but it appears to be doing very well. What a difference a year makes. Last year we started on October 8 and the corn was much wetter and NEVER did get down to 21. This is the earliest I ever remember harvesting corn. I recall harvesting once on September 6th about 10 years ago but nothing else even close. This is my favorite time of the year. All of our work the entire year culminates in one final pass across the field. Something about the smell of a corn field being harvested and a wagon load of corn.
I better get going. Still lots of corn to pick! We will go take care of the cattle and then move to another farm.
And today is my birthday so I will go to town and get some doughnuts so we can celebrate while we are picking corn. Living the dream!
