Aux Hydraulics MF 165

I can't get the aux hydralics on my MF 165 to work. The 3 point lift works OK but when I attach my recently acquired Vermeer bale lifter, nothing happens. the bale lifter seems to have hydraulic fluid in it when I press the quick disconnect ball valves. the MF 165 Aux Hydraulic ports may never have been use. I have checked the manual but don't see anything wrong. Is there some valve that I need to turn. How can I isolate the problem to either the tractor or the lifter?
Any other suggestions?
