Good for you for quitting of YOUR OWN CHOICE. I quit about a year ago the day a guy came back to work after having a triple bypass, and he smoked too. He had been off for several months, and one day I rounded the corner and there he was. We talked and I asked him about his ordeal since he was there one day, and then just gone for months. He said one night he just couldn't sleep and had trouble breathing in his chest, so he got up and went down stairs and was able to sleep sitting up in a lazyboy. The next night, same thing. Couldn't sleep, so down to the lazyboy, but it got worse where he couldn't breath, but was able to muster enough to hollar up to his wife to take him to the ER since lived kind of remote and didn't want to lose time. He said when she got him to the ER doors, they were waiting for him with a gurney and that he hadn't had a breath for what seemed like eternity, and was losing consciousness. He nearly died at the hospital entrance.
So anyway, I quit that very night at the age of 50, but not exactly for the same reason. I went to bed that night, fell soundly asleep, but was awaken becaus I was choking. My throat closed up like someone was standing on it with their heavy work boots. I couldn't swallow or breath until I sat up. Then I laid back down and fell asleep. The next day, I had a couple of cigarettes, but they didn't taste right. That night I went to bed, same thing. Fell asleep, woke up because someone was standing on my throat again. That was a year ago and that pack of cigarettes is still setting there, and I only had one after that...TO BURN TICKS OFF OF ME. Get this. If you don't puff on the cigarettes they have around here, they go out, which means the paper is coated with a chemical to do that, and probably the one that closed my throat. Anyway, if you don't puff on cigarettes now, they go out immediately. I was working outside cutting firewood, and when got undressed that night to take a shower, had three ticks burrowed in me, so took one of those cigarettes and lit it to get heat close enough to make the ticks uncomfortable and back out. Stupid cigarette kept going out because I wasn't puffing on it to keep it lit. I ended up having to use a needle to pick them (full head) out.
Anyway, every now and then it would be nice to have a smoke, but on those occasions that I briefly think about having one, I remember what it was to wake up with someone standing on my throat those two nights, and will never smoke again because I also breath deeper and easier these days. I was a pack and a half per day for two decades and quit cold turkey, no more coughing. I don't like guys standing on my throat choking me.
