The tobacco companies used to add a chemical to the cigarettes to keep them from going out. Now they aren't allowed to. So it had to be something else that caused your problem.
My Dad had smoked since he was a teen ager. One Sunday morning Mom called to me (in the basement) that Dad was having problems. I checked and told Mom to call the ambulance. She called 911 and by some miracle got connected to the Sheriff's office. Our 911 hadn't been activated yet, I guess Cincinnati Bell connected us to Hamilton County, which then connected us to Dearborn County. While waiting for an EMT I performed external heart massage. Dad was responding again when the first EMT arrived. He called for University Hospital's Aircare, the ambulance crew hauled Dad out the driveway to a neighbor's hayfield where the Bright VFD marked out a landing zone. At University Hospital an Aortic Aneurism burst as they were taking him in, and they went straight to surgery. Without Aircare he would have been DOA. He spent a month in the ICU, on all sorts of machines, and when he was lucid again, the Doctor told him "You light up, you die".
He had already been a month without a cigarette, and he never smoked again. A year later he was cutting and baling hay. Financially we were lucky, Uncle Procter (P&G) takes good care of their retirees.
