Gun Guru. You are crazy if you think that not having a hand gun will make your nine year old safer. You already have guns in the house. ( I do too. Not knocking you for that) I would bet that your kid already knows where and how to get to your guns. Take your son out and shoot your guns with him. It takes the novelty away from it. My kids by the age of five or six had shot a gun of some kind. A gun is not a big deal to them. They are around them and they know what they can do. Go hunting and show your kid that a gun can kill. He might get sick seeing something bleeding but he will know first hand what a gun can do. The kids that are involved in accidental gun deaths are usually the ones that never have been around them. This is a case where lack of knowledge is the danger. I have two shot guns that are loaded on racks above my bedroom door and the kitchen door. By the time you get a cabinet or trigger lock undone it too late. When you are under pressure you will not react the same as you do when normal. I have seen Cops that have fired thousands of rounds, and have practiced drawing their fire arms, not be able to get their gun out of a safety holster while under pressure. As for the permits. I have had one for years. Used to collect bills/repo farm equipment, worked for a finance company. Had several close calls that would not have been good if I did not have a firearm for a deterrent. Never have fired it in those situations but have showed it to defuse some hot head.
