I think you're wrong about the price of a new car around 1970.
Sticker price on a new VW was $1999...Pinto, Vega, and Gremlin were between $1995 and $1998, so they could say they were cheaper than VW. You might get a deal, but NO WAY were you going to buy a NEW car for HALF of sticker price. And these sticker prices were STRIPPED...no automatic, no radio, no a/c [thank God heater was finally standard equipment by then].
So your comparison between gasoline prices and new car prices is invalid on its face. Maybe if you bought a King Midget you could get a car for under $1000, but not a "real" car that would run expressway speeds.
