Two more that just came to mind.
My first wife's parents bought her a new Renault in 1967 to get to college with. It was $1100, but can't recall if it was a model 8, 10, or Dauphine.
And my dad bought a brand new English Ford Anglia in 1961 for $1200. But, this was a "big" car as compared to some of the others I mentioned, since it had a four-cylinder engine and a back seat. It wound up being by first car. I blew the engine by putting in J.C. Whitney "super-horsepower", "fire-injector" spark plugs. The hit the pistons and ruined it.
I see these bottom-dollar cars fair to compare with new cars today - e.g. the Korean Daewoo that Chevy sells as the Aveo, or the Indian Smart car, etc.

Today's Featured Article - Product Review: Black Tire Paint - by Staff. I have been fortunate in that two of my tractors have had rear tires that were in great shape when I bought the tractor.
