First of all, I would not have my wife and kid in any car I hadn't checked over first - and recently. Especially something with high miles driven on salt and being subject to hydrochloric acid.
Even if we had a brand new car (which will never happen), I'd still stick it up on a lift, check it over, etc. I'm not very trusting.
Second of all - I've seen detailed photos of what is specifically failing on the Ford vans. There is nothing that is failing all-of-a-sudden with no warning. It'a process and certain parts are failing in a certain order. All open to be seen if someone bothers to look close.
I've been turning wrenches on cars and trucks for 50 years, all in salt-belts. During that time I've seen some terribly designed cars and trucks - and some rusted badly in just five years. Not the case, here.
I suspect some people on these forums don't remember what US cars were like when they first started using recycled metal instead of virgin?
How about when US cars had plain, untreated brake-lines and single-master cylinders?
How come few complain about the acid solutions being put on many of the US roads? In my area, road salt use has tripled in the past 30 years. Seems you can't blame that on the car makers.
