Being a legal eagle, I deal with Dept. of Licensing stuff all the time, but I swear, I will never completely understand mobile homes. They are neither fish nor fowl- they may be personal property subject to personal property taxes, but may also be a titled vehicle. Unless you have had the title eliminated, then they become real estate. So lets review: they can be real estate, or they can be a licensed vehicle, or they can be taxable personal property. To top it all off, owners often let things slip through the cracks, so they are none of the three. I think I'm getting a headache.
Licensing activities for the state Dept. of Licensing is done through each county Auditor (Recorder's) office. I called them for a guy who wanted to dismantle an old mobile on his property. After verifying that the mobile was not "on the books", the county gal went through the "official" procedure, involving certificates, permits and affidavits (and several fees). Then she said "but off the record, the best procedure by far is to just have the thing disappear, never to be heard from again. Recycle what you can, and take the rest to the dump. Remember, you didn't hear it here."
