I was in a similar boat back just after new years of 08. I had seen the writing on the wall at my job, so I got a job at another machine shop. I gave my 2 weeks and worked that night. Next day I came in for my shift and was fired on the spot.
I filed for unemployment, and got it. I had my other job lined up and could have gone to work imediately at the other shop, but didn't feel like it. Worked there for 3 months, didn't like the atmosphere (brother died, not so much as a card) so I went to a pattern shop where my former supervisor at shop #1 went to. (We quit on the same day) Worked there for 5 months, got fired for butting heads with the owner's butt sniffer, and now have been gainfully employed at the same shop for about 2 1/2 years, and love my job.
