This is my best memory of SPAM. In Vietnam Spam was the best trading item to have. My unit always made sure we had several cans each when we went into deep cover. In Apr of 1972 we came on a burnt out shell of a hut. In side where the bodies of two men and a women. In the corner where four little girls. Ages 2,6,8,& 14. The bodies where their parents and older brother. The girls had hid in the jungle when the Viet Gong ambushed the hut and killed their family. When we found these little girls they had not had anything to eat but bugs, mice and snakes for days. The oldest girl(14)weighted 48 lbs. She had been giving most of her share to the younger ones. They where terrified of us but I was not going to leave them there to starve. We built a fire and diced up a can of SPAM and some local yams (real close to potatoes). We boiled that until it was a real thick broth. We fed the girls real slow and little serving for the next twenty-four hours. When they where strong enought to move we carried them out. Flash forward. I was able to get those four girls back to Iowa to live with my Grand parents. They are now in their late thirties to fifty. The oldest is a doctor, next one is a lawyer, Next is a college professor, the youngest is a forth grade teacher. They are part of my family. Whenever they get together for a few days they will fix diced up SPAM and potatoes. They set there and eat it like it is the best steak in the world. When ever I see a can of SPAM my mind flashes back to those four little girls in that hut.
