M Hydraulic Pump doesn't work

I've got a '48 M with the "christmas tree" two way hydraulic system. No matter what I do, I can't get the pump to create pressure. The resivoir was empty when I started, so I added 6 qts of hyd. fluid. On my H, all I have to do is pull the main lever back and either fluid will flow, or the engine will bog down slightly, which tells me it's working. This doesn't happen on my M. It's almost as if the coupler is broken and the pump isn't turning... Anyone have any other suggestions?? I have a serviceman's guide, so I'm probably just going to overhaul the pump but I'd love to find a more "simple" fix.
