400 diesel

I went to take a look at a 400 diesel last night. Oil was dirty but did not have the sludge buildup I usually see with moisture, however there was oil in the top of the radiator :( Is this the old 'farmallitis' cracked head I hear about on diesels, or possibly just a head gasket? I didn't hear it run. It was raining and he needed to pull start it. The starter or possibly the ring gear on flywheel is bad. Said it will start to fire on gas but won't keep running, so they switch over to diesel quickly and it will keep running once it fires on diesel. It has sat for a while, looks to need a carb kit and a tune up on the gas side. The diesel side doesn't look like the pictures I've seen of the MD's (with 2 fuel filters) but just has what looks like one glass sediment bulb type of filter. It's rusty, hood is nice, grill beat up, IPTO, fast hitch, live hyd's with 1 remote. Appears to never have had the TA, but I'm not the expert on ID'ing that, controls could have been removed. Standard 3 gauges in the instrument panel, but below the panel on the right side is a 3 to 4 inch diameter hole, what was that for? Said he's had a lot of people come to look at it, but no takers yet. He started at 1500 and is down to 1200 now. I'm tending toward staying away from this one, but it is less than 10 miles from my house so thought I would at least ask advice about these diesel problems first.
