More on the 1066 not staying in reverse

Took the plate off the left side of the range transmission and and all kinds of stuff fell out. One and a half of the little bushings, the spring that holds the tension arms tight, and a small - short bolt screwed into a piece of chewed-up sheet metal. The big gear towards the front of the tractor sides freely back and forth. Is it suposed to? What am I looking for that would keep the tractor from staying in reverse? THE TRACTOR VET was dead on about how much oil I would lose when I took the plate off!! Thanks for the good advice - Please send more!!
