Sounds like a bad bearing in the transmission, either on the transmission input shaft or at the front end of the countershaft. Or possibly a badly worn constant mesh gearset in the transmission. You can check the condition of the input shaft bearing by removing the dust cover beneath the clutch housing, grabbing the input shaft coupling and seeing if there is any radial play at the transmission half of the coupling. If you detect any play at all, the input bearing is NG. Also is the transmission properly filled with gear oil? (Level check plug is on left side in front of the clutch pedal pivot). If the transmission's been allowed to run dry it's gonna cost $$$ to make it right - either for a repair or a rear end swap. If it turns out to be a single bad bearing, $850 sounds like a fair price IMHO. Hope this helps!
