I clearly remember that era. I was in high school at the time and my Dad's farming operation was growing by leaps and bounds. I remeber when the 06 series came out. I was in fourth grade and remember seeing the ads in the Farm Journal. Every once in a while I would get to go to the IH dealer with Dad and actually see the big new machines. Dad went from a Super C in 1961 to a new 1256 in 1969. In between he had a 340, new 656, 560 and 706. That 1256 was the biggest tractor in the county when he got it. I'm sorry but John Deere had nothing on IH when the 56 sereis came out. They had their shifting problems fixed with the new tractors and the 407 was the meanest engine in any tractor out there. I remember the new instrumentation on the 56 series, the larger platform, the hydraulic seat and the tilt wheel, along with the chrome levers. A year after we got the 1256 the 1456 came out. I remember the first one I saw at the IH dealer. What a tractor that was! The one I saw had the new Diamond shaped Excel made cab and the new Auxiliary fuel tank. It also had dual 20.8-38 tires and front weights. What a nice machine! The IH tractors of those years are my favorites to this day. If IH had came out with the 86 series at the time the 66 series came out they would still be operating as IH. In my opinion the 66 sereies was a step sideways, not forward.

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
