Super C Battery Backwards?

I recently purchased a Super C that starts and runs great. The only problem is that the generator does not function. It also appears that someone installed the battery backwards; negative instead of positive ground.

Could this be the reason the generator is not working? I see this as the quickest and easiest fix; if it is the problem.

Am I apt to burn something out by correcting the polarity of the ground?

Are there any quick tips to diagnosing a generator problem?
