Hopefully you'll get some responses from smarter people than me but here goes. The starter will work fine with the ground either way, 6 Volts, 8 Volts, 12 Volts - it doesn't care. You won't burn anything up by correcting the polarity. Quick check? Get your battery turned around, make a light work so that when you turn on the switch there's a draw, observe the amp gauge, it should show discharge. This test will tell you if the wiring in the dash is correct. Polarize the generator, check to see that the wire connected to the Bat terminal on regulator is live, run the tractor, observe the amp gauge. If there is no charge, open the cover on the regulator (cut-out)and phsically close the contacts, observe the amp gauge. If all has failed so far, attach a lead wire from the F terminal on generator to the ground strap of the battery, observe the gauge. Again physically close those contacts. If at this point the contacts do not stay closed and no amps are registered and the wiring is right, the generater is a goner.
