Leather seals vs. rubber seals

Every time I replace one of the original leather oil seals in one of my Farmalls I think "Man, this old seal has lasted 50 years. Wonder how long this rubber lipped seal will last." It seems the leather seals are wider than the replacement seals so I've been putting in two of the new seals where there was only one of the old ones. Is this necessary? What are the rest of you guys doing?
