Steering wheel query

Got a Super M, 1952 never restored, runs nice.
Problem: When I drive it my hands turn black from the steering wheel.
The rubber(?) is mostly all there, and seemingly in good condition, I'm wondering what I can do to cure this rubbing off problem.
I've heard of people painting the wheel with flat black spray paint, is this acceptable? How long does it last?
I've also thought about spraying it with a matte clearcoat, but again I have doubts about the durability. This is a working machine and is used about every weekend during the summer so this fix needs to last awhile if it's going to be worth it....... Other than that I suppose I could wear gloves...
