Paul, the gas tanks get a lot of junk in the bottoms, if you take the guage out, look down in it with a flashlight, you'll be able to see. It sounds like it's starving for gas for sure. I took the tank off mine last fall and cleaned it out, made a big difference. Didn't have time then, but this summer i'm going to seal the tank, it's got rust spots starting from condensation. Bought it new in '75. There's also a screen in the fitting where the line attaches to the carb. The icing is normal, lots of them do it.
