If it shows more than about five amps, the generator is charging the battery; but a six-volt generator is unlikely to properly charge a twelve-volt battery. Get a voltmeter and check the votage at the battery terminals while the ammeter shows the voltage regulator is allowing the high rate of charge. Seven volts or so? You DO have the original six-volt generator, and need to make a decision about whether to to a REAL twelve-volt conversion or not. Fourteen volts or so? Some one replaced the six-volt generator with a twelve volt one. You have some other problem, perhaps a bad battery.
