It would be normal for a 12 volt conversion to still have the 6 volt starter in place. If used properly they will last a long time. If the charging system is indeed still for 6 volt, the regulator and cut out must have been readjusted for 12 volt use. If the cut out had not been adjusted those contacts would stay closed and quickly drain the battery when not in use, Before alternators became readily available for conversion use, it was not unusual to just replace the battery, add a resister to the coil, change the light bulbs, and then readjust to regulator to function as a 12 volt system. The regulators were the weak part of this system. Since they were being operated at twice their designed voltage it was difficult to keep them adjuted properly.
